Climate Action Awareness Event
Posted on December 9, 2024
Recently, the Senior School Climate Action Club held a film viewing and Q&A event funded by a Youth Climate Action Fund from the Hobart City Council, supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies. Students from Years 9 to 12 organised the event by applying for the grant, contacting guest speakers, writing scripts and questions, advertising the event, and arranging catering. Karen Gowlett-Holmes, Cassy O’Connor, Pete Walsh, and Darcy Wright, made up the Q&A Panel, answering questions posed by both the members of the student-led Climate Action Club and the audience. Overall, it was a lovely event and a variety of Friends’ School community members that attended.
During the planning of the event, students took on major organising roles. Cross-campus meetings between the Middle School and Senior School students were held to discuss the grant and what sort of event we could hold to receive it. In the end, Senior School students (led by 2024 Head Student, Eve Cooper) applied to the Hobart City Council to run a film screening and Q&A event, and they were successful. From this point forward, the weekly Climate Action Club meetings were focused more on planning the event rather than writing letters. This was also challenging for the Year 12 students to manage as they were all going through final exams.
All the organisation and planning eventually led to the event happening at the Farrall Centre on December 1st. Students spoke and introduced three different short films and Q&A sessions with the guest speakers. Audience members participated in the Q&A, making it a much more lively event. Overall, the event provided the audience with more knowledge about specific issues that Climate Change is creating, and gained. The Climate Action Club wishes to host more community events in the future, so stay posted and feel free to get involved!
