The Friends’ School Celebrates Academic Success
The Friends’ School is proud to celebrate the exceptional achievements of its 2024 Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE), International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) and Vocational Education and Training (VET) students. These results reflect the commitment of students to the School’s Purpose and Concerns, alongside the unwavering support of staff, families and the wider school community.
2024 IBDP Results
Thirty one Year 12 students completed the globally recognised IBDP, achieving an impressive mean score of 33.2 (out of 45), equivalent to a notional ATAR of 86.7. Particular congratulations goes to Eve Cooper, Grace Winspear, Charlotte Bateman and Isabel Ascui whose outstanding achievements will be recognised at the IB Diploma Awards Ceremony to be held in Melbourne in February, 2025.
Having run the program for over 25 years, Friends’ is the only school that offers the IB Diploma Programme in Tasmania. The programme prepares students for success in university and beyond with its focus upon academic rigour, breadth and depth of learning across a range of disciplines as well as intercultural understanding. All of these facets are evident in the six subjects students undertake as well as the core components: Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, and Service.
IBDP Coordinator, Sarah Walker, remarked, “The IB Diploma dovetails perfectly with our school’s mission: to inspire students to be positive and contributing members of society who seek to make a more fair and just world for all. These results, and the personal growth behind them, reflect the hard work of our students, the expertise of our staff, and the support of families”.
“I’m taking a gap year next year to travel and explore the world before heading to university to study Environmental Science. Although I’ve only been here for Years 11 and 12, I specifically came to do the IB, and it’s been an incredible experience. The programme has taught me more than I ever imagined, and I’ve met some wonderful people along the way. The staff, teachers and support team have made my time here truly special.” Year 12 IB student, Isabel Ascui
“Next year, I’m planning a gap year to save money, travel, and explore a few interests. I’m not entirely sure what I want to pursue long-term, but I’ve been accepted into ANU for a double degree in International Relations and Political Science. The IB has given me so much more than just academic knowledge – the whole programme and its activities have equipped me with invaluable skills.
My advice for current students? Work hard and stay organised, but also aim for balance. Try new things, even if they seem random – I participated in house chess and house dance, for example. Involve yourself in the school community, but don’t forget to enjoy the journey.” Year 12 IB student, Eve Cooper
2024 TCE & VET Results
Eleven TCE students of our graduating 2024 cohort were placed in the Top 100 Tertiary Entrance scores in Tasmania and 58% of our graduating students received an ATAR of 90 or higher. Five students achieved an ATAR of 99.5 or higher. 98% of the students studying the TCE pathway achieved the award of the TCE. The median TCE ATAR for all students studying the TCE was 92.2. Congratulations to Eva Downie, Violet Bunting, Elizabeth Ralph and Henry Webster who have been awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award for their studies in VET.
“I’m planning to study Medicine at UTAS, and just this morning, I received my acceptance letter – it’s very exciting! One of the key factors that made a difference during my time at Friends’ was the teachers. They genuinely wanted the best for the students and built strong connections with us, which had a really positive impact on me.
My advice to current students? Stay organised, use your time wisely, but don’t let schoolwork overshadow co-curricular activities or having a life outside of school. Balance is everything.” Year 12 TCE student, Logan Boxall
“I’m taking a gap year to travel and make the most of my time. I’ll be spending three months in Europe with my cousin, going skiing in Canada, and working to save up. Then in 2026, I plan to study Medicine at Monash University”. Year 12 VET student, Violet Bunting
Principal Esther Hill acknowledged the academic achievements of all pathways, emphasising that Friends’ students are defined by more than their ATARs. “Our graduates embody the School motto, Nemo Sibi Nascitur – No One Is Born For Self Alone, and leave Friends’ with a passion to make a difference in the world,” she said.
“The 2024 year group excelled across all areas of school life, reflecting Friends’ values of kindness, service and a global perspective. They have excelled as a cohort over the years and we are very proud of their achievements, academic excellence, creative pursuits and community involvement. Whether in the classroom, on the sports field, or through their contributions to service and leadership initiatives, they have embodied the Quaker values of kindness and care for others”.
We are proud of all of our 2024 graduates, their outstanding results and all that they have achieved during their time at The Friends’ School. As we celebrate the successes of TCE, IBDP and VET students, we look forward to the future contributions these graduates will make as they “let their lives speak”.
