The Friends’ School takes road and traffic safety very seriously.

As a central Hobart school with almost 1,300 students, we all have a responsibility to take extra care around our neighbouring roads when travelling to and from the School.

Please take the time to read the specific campus road safety reminders below and general considerations developed by our Road Safety Taskforce.

We encourage students to travel safely to and from the School via public transport, bike, scooter or on foot and where possible, for parents to carpool to help minimise the impact of traffic congestion around our School.

The message is simple. We need to put the welfare of our community above our own convenience. Remember; if not for you, for them!

Please note and follow these safety considerations:

Argyle Street Campus - Early Learning, Primary and Middle School

  • When crossing Argyle Street, including parking on the opposite side of Argyle Street or in Archer Street please use the overpass. When travelling across the overpass with a bike or scooter, please dismount as you approach the overpass and walk with your bike. Do not ride your bike or scooter across.
  • Do not park or stop on resident driveways, on yellow lines or in “No Standing Zones”. This is illegal.
  • Do not stop illegally or in the middle of the road to pick up or drop off students.
  • We encourage families and students to park in Stoke Street, Letitia Street or Lewis Street and then walk to School. This will minimise congestion on Boa Vista Road, Argyle Street and Archer Street.
  • Boa Vista Road currently has no parking between 8-9 am and 2:30-4pm and drivers need to stay with their vehicle when dropping children off.  Families should also use the kerb bulbing to safely cross the road.

Commercial Road Campus - Senior School

  • When travelling between campuses, please use the overpass. When travelling across the overpass with a bike or scooter, please dismount as you approach the overpass and walk with your bike. Do not ride your bike or scooter across.
  • We encourage families to drop off and pick up students away from main entrance areas.  Please avoid the front entrance of the Commercial Road car park. If students need to be dropped off near an entrance to the campus please use the “Stop & Drop” zone in Carr Street.
  • We advise not to use the parking spaces or driveway between North Block and The Revell Sports Centre for parking or stop and dropping students.
  • Do not park or stop on resident driveways, on yellow lines or in no standing zones. This is illegal.
  • Do not stop illegally or in the middle of the road to pick up or drop off students.
  • Students who need to cross Elizabeth Street should use the crossing at the traffic lights near the Hill Street Store. The traffic island near Rupert Avenue Coffee Shop is not a safe option for large groups of students to cross the road.
  • We encourage families and students to park in Ryde Street, Argyle Street or Augusta Avenue and then students walk to School. This will minimise congestion on Commercial Road and Carr Street.
