Senior School

The Senior School at Friends’ is for Years 9 to 12 and is located on the Commercial Road campus. The Senior School is home to more than 550 students in four houses (Hodgkin, Mather, Ransome, Unwin).

Our Senior School campus aims to give your child the tools they will need to thrive in and beyond the classroom.

The transition from Middle to Secondary education is an important time in a young person's life.

At The Friends’ School, we aim to develop capable learners and confident young adults who are able to think critically, make decisions for themselves and act with integrity.

Students have access to a varied curriculum and as they progress through their years of secondary education, they are able to tailor their studies to suit their individual interests and passions.

Students are able to participate in a wide range of co-curricular activities including a variety of sports (including rowing, sailing, equestrian, soccer, hockey and basketball), music and dramatic arts (including dance, musicals and individual and group musical tuition), service-related endeavours (button selling, Amnesty letter writing, working with the Southern Support School) and academic pursuits including the Da Vinci Decathlon, Mathematics Challenge and debating.

In these vital years, students are encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities they have available to them and to create a balanced and rich schooling life.

A strong sense of community in the Senior School provides a rich and stimulating environment for students.

The School’s philosophy aims to develop the whole person and for students to show a willingness to contribute to something greater than the individual. Opportunities for involvement fall into the categories of Action, Creativity and Service. We offer a diverse range of co-curricular activities including sports, student-led committees, social functions and service opportunities which can be used to qualify for the Friends’ Certificate. Our hope is that our students will leave The Friends’ School with a broad understanding of and empathy for the Quaker testimonies of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality and Stewardship.

The Pastoral Care program centres around Tutor Groups which support students with all aspects of their development. The tutor provides oversight in the learning partnership between the School, students and families. Students also experience a structured program of assemblies featuring guest speakers on topics relevant to young adults and Gatherings provide an opportunity for regular reflection using Quaker practices.

In order to help navigate the transition into young adulthood, the Senior School offers a range of support options for students. This includes the study skills program, wellbeing offerings such as yoga, personal fitness and adventure education courses as well as dedicated services for pathway planning, counselling and access to an onsite educational psychologist.  The Friends’ School provides many opportunities for student leadership with a student council hosting a range of initiatives which reinforce the sense of community, promote student wellbeing and raise funds and awareness for charities.
